The Role of Erdogan Government’s Economic Policies in Consolidating Political Power in Turkey
The economy has always been a key factor influencing politics and reinforcing the political power of governments. In this context, the economic policies of Erdogan’s government in Turkey have played a pivotal role in strengthening its political legitimacy and consolidating its position both domestically and internationally, serving as an effective tool for maintaining stability and prolonging its hold on power. Accordingly, this study examines the role of Erdogan’s economic policies in consolidating his government’s political power in Turkey. The central research question is: How have the economic policies of Erdogan’s government contributed to the consolidation of its political power in Turkey?
Drawing on neoliberal theory, the hypothesis posits that Erdogan’s government, by prioritizing the private sector, expanding exports, developing industry, supporting agriculture, joining international economic organizations, and attracting foreign investment, has fostered Turkey’s economic growth, thereby reinforcing its political power.The findings indicate that successful economic policies are directly linked to a government’s political legitimacy, as public economic satisfaction fosters political loyalty and ensures the continuity of ruling authority. This descriptive-analytical study relies on library resources and online databases for data collection.
